Every week, the Johnson State College Athletics Department spotlights one male and one female student-athlete that have excelled either on the playing surface or in the classroom and community.

This week’s female student-athlete spotlight is women’s tennis captain Kali Covell. Covell was 4-2 on the week in singles and doubles competition. Covell and the Badgers dominated Green Mountain on Wednesday, sweeping the Eagles 9-0 for their fourth conference victory of the season.

Off the court, Covell has exceled as a media digital arts major with a minor in business. Covell was chosen by Johnson State College President Elaine Collins to attend the Regional COPLAC conference this October in Massachussettes. Her and her film partner will present their film "Orange You Glad!", which won the top award at the 2016 48-hour Film Slam sponsored by CATV and White River Indie Films. Covell has also been a leader of community service for the Badgers women’s tennis team, organizing the team’s community service project where they donated “decorated with love” tennis balls to the Brookside Nursing Home in Wilder, Vt. Covell has also served as an orientation leader the past two years, welcoming incoming Johnson students moving in for their first year.

Covell and the Badgers will travel to Plattsburgh State on Friday, then play at Castleton on Saturday in their final NAC game of the season. Johnson will play their final regular season game on Tuesday at Curry.
