Johnson Announces Addition of Men's Volleyball for 2018-19 Season

JOHNSON, Vt. – Johnson State College Director of Athletics and Recreation Jamey Ventura announced today the addition of men's volleyball as Johnson's 16th varsity sport. Men's volleyball will begin play during the 2018-19 academic year.

The department also announced the addition of the full-time position of Head Men's and Women's Volleyball Coach and SHAPE Facility Manager. A national search is underway to fill the position.

"We're very excited to bring men's volleyball to Johnson," said Ventura. "As a growing youth sport with limited opportunity to play beyond high school, this program will help us create an avenue for men's volleyball student-athletes to continue playing the sport while advancing their education." In addition, he notes that the men's volleyball program is a natural complement to the existing women's team, which began competing in 2009.

In 2017, there were 138 NCAA men's volleyball programs, including 93 in Division III. There are 18 Division III programs in New England and one in Vermont (Southern Vermont College).

Men's volleyball will join women's triathlon as new sports that will begin competition in 2018-19 when Johnson State College transitions to Northern Vermont University.
