Cheyann Tooman Commits to NVU-Johnson as Dual-Sport Athlete

JOHNSON, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's basketball and women's track and field programs earned a another deposit for the 2019-2020 season. Cheyann Tooman has signed the necessary paperwork and has committed to NVU-Johnson as a dual-sport athlete.

Tooman plans to be a two sport athlete when arriving at NVU-Johnson, where she will compete on both the women's basketball team and women's track and field in the spring. A native of Whitehall, Montana, Tooman plans to pursue a degree in Music Education when she arrives at NVU-Johnson. "I chose NVU because it was a smaller college and it was out of my comfort zone. I was willing to try something new such as moving. Perfect enough they had my major and I could continue my basketball career. I plan on studying music education with an emphasis in Band", Said Tooman.

Cheyann was a member of the Belgrade High School varsity girls program and played the forward position for Head Coach Sarah Fowler during her career. "Cheyann is one of the hardest workers I have coached", Said Fowler. "She will do anything she is asked to do to the best of her ability and will make her teammates better.  She will be a great leader on and off of the court for you- very focused and goal oriented. She will be a great addition not only to your team but your campus and college community as a whole." Working hard and grit is something that Cheyann takes pride in on the floor. She is a player that knows her role and works to the best of her ability to outwork her opponents. "Cheyann has developed a lot in the last year and has room to continue to get better.  She started really put a ton of time into basketball the summer before her junior year and has made tons of progress" Fowler said.

Those qualities will fit well with the culture of the women's basketball program. "I feel close to the Badger family already and they were all very welcoming which is going to help make this transition so much easier. I can't wait to make new friends and family". Cheyann is also thrilled to play under Coach Eckman and to learn more about his style of coaching and how to best utilize her as a player. "I am really excited to play under Coach Eckman because he understands my playing style and how to use me to benefit the team the best". Cheyann continued, "Also, I'm excited to play under him because I know I can earn playing time by working hard and being coachable".

Having depth at the forward position will help the Badgers this upcoming season. Head Coach Greg Eckman believes Tooman can be a strong defender for the Badgers next season. "From the first time I saw Cheyanne play I was impressed with her defensive ability and am confident she will be a great defender in our conference."  Cheyann will play the post for us and will provide a great presence in the paint."  "She is a solid rebounder, works hard to get her teammates open and has the ability to finish around the rim."

Cheyann Tooman will also be a member on the NVU-Johnson women's track and field team. Throughout her high school career in track and field Tooman has competed in the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump, javelin, shot put and discus. She is excited to have the opportunity to further continue with the sport at the collegiate level. "I am super excited that Coach Shawn Woods has given me the opportunity to continue track and I can't wait to keep progressing each year".
