The term internship has been defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) as a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. With this definition in mind and with a coordinated effort by the Northern Vermont University-Johnson Career Services office and the Johnson Athletic Training Department, an internship has been created for the job title of Athletic Training Aide in the NVU-J Athletic Training room.
The Athletic Training Aide (ATA) position is open to any NVU-J upperclassman that is pursuing an Health Science degree. The position is designed to contribute to the student’s personal and professional development through assisting with the daily operations of the JSC athletic training room. The ATA can expect to have hands on interactions with NVU-J student-athletes and be involved with several special projects including development and implementation of a rehabilitation program, strength and conditioning program, authoring NVU-J athletic training policy, and observation of orthopedic surgery made possible by the partnership with Dr. Brian Aros and Mansfield Orthopaedics.
The Strength and Conditioning Aide (SCA) position is open to any NVU-J upperclassman that is pursuing a Health Science degree. The position is designed to contribute to the student’s personal and professional development through assisting with the NVU-Johnson varsity athletics strength and conditioning program. The SCA can expect to have hands on interactions with NVU-J student-athletes and involvement with the strength and conditioning program includes, but no limited to development of strength plans, implementation of plans, daily workouts, demonstration of exercise techniques, spotting, and facility maintenance. The ATA and SCA internships are unpaid positions that offer up to three (3) credits.
