Mission Statement 

The mission of the Recreation and Intramural programs is to provide recreational, intramural and wellness opportunities for the Johnson State community.  Through a wide variety of activity offerings, the Recreation and Intramural programs strive to provide opportunities that foster physical, social and emotional wellness.  Offerings have been designed to provide equal opportunity for participation regardless of gender, age, race, interests, or motor skill level.

Age Groups/Times/Course Description:

Tadpoles

TBA

6 months – 18 months

This 30 minute class is an introduction to the pool for parents and their infants. Program instruction is directed toward helping parents work with their children. We focus on creating a special fun time for parents and children through water games and basic movements.  One adult must accompany each child in the water.

Class Size: 4 students: 1 instructor
Duration: 30 minutes


Minnow’s

3 – 7 years 

This class is for new swimmers who may be apprehensive in the water. Minnow’s class introduces swimmer to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits in a fun and encouraging environment. Children learn water adjustment skills, voluntary submersion of their face and ears, independent movement with floatation support and will work on gaining confidence in back float.

Class Size: 4 students: 1 instructor
Duration: 30 minutes


Leapfrogs

6 years – 12 years

Requirements:

  • Student must be able to put their face (up to ears) in the water for at least three seconds
  • Perform front-and back floats for 10 seconds with assistance
  • Swim 5 yards on front or back with floatation
  • Listen and follow directions.

This class is for beginning swimmers who are comfortable putting their face in the water. Students will learn to swim on their front and back with emphasis on independent pool entry and exit safety skills.

Class Size: 4 students: 1 instructor

Duration: 30 minutes


Seahorses

5 years and up

Primary Focus: This is an advanced beginner swim class with the goal of gaining control with breathing and basic swim skills. It is for students with no anxiety when submerging or floating on their backs and already have basic foundational swim skills.

Student Goals: To efficiently move through the water demonstrating the basics of the freestyle and backstroke and breath control.

Class Size: 4 students: 1 instructor
Duration: 30 minutes

Graduate Assistant Recreation & Intramurals: Greg Davis

 

 

 

About Greg:

Greg Davis is a JSC alumnus from Philadelphia, PA, who graduated from JSC this May 2016 with a Health and Exercise Science degree. Greg will be serving as our graduate assistant for the Athletic and Recreation Department. When it comes to athletics and recreation at JSC, it is hard to name a role Greg has not played: Manager, Captain, and Point Guard for the Men's Basketball team. Member of the varisty Men's Cross Country, Golf, Tennis (also captain), and Soccer. Greg was also the Vice President and President of the JSC Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Those roles put him in positions to Coordinate other programs one being the JSC annual Special Olympics basketball tournament. Greg also had other huge leadership roles around campus: working as an admission tour guide and as a Junior Admission Counselor, poster child for our IChoose Campiagn, and game day operations intern for our athletic department.
