Youth is Served in Western New England's 9-0 Non-Conference Rout at Johnson State
JOHNSON, Vt.--Senior Michael Masciadrelli, freshman Nick Raschilla and sophomore Kevin Yawgel each accounted for two wins to help the Western New England University men's tennis team to a 9-0 non-conference victory at Johnson State College on Thursday. The visiting Golden Bears improve to 7-5 on the season while the Badgers remain winless at 0-10.
Yawgel, who is in his first season with the Golden Bears, was a double winner No. 6 singles over Zach Baughn 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with Raschilla for a No. 3 doubles victory over Alex Harcourt and Baughn, 8-0. Raschilla also picked up a No. 4 singles triumph via a shutout, 6-0, 6-0 versus Alex Pakatar.
Freshman Adam Pollack took a 6-0, 6-1 No. 2 singles triumph against Cole Hennessy, while junior newcomer Nicolas Ewert breezed by Cory Chase at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Masciadrelli partnered with senior tri-captain PJ Nassar for an 8-1 victory in No. 2 doubles over Nihad Basic and Hennessy, and he also won his No. 5 singles match versus Basic in come-from-behind fashion, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Peter LeFrancois defeated Gerrit Lane 10-7 in a super tiebreaker in a No. 1 singles battle, after the former won the first set and the latter took the second to force the tiebreak.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of senior tri-captain Greg Tischofer and classmate Chris Spear beat Lane and Chase, 8-1.
Western New England will host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday (noon) at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.
