NAC Men's Basketball Preseason Polls Announced

Colby-Sawyer College has been tabbed the favorite in the 2015-16 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's basketball preseason coaches' poll. The defending champion Chargers claimed eight of the ten first place votes for a total of 95 points, while Husson University was selected second with 86 points including one first place vote and Castleton University placed third with 75 points.

Thomas College took fourth with 65 points, Lyndon State College placed fifth with 57 points, and Green Mountain College was selected sixth with 55 points after claiming the remaining first place vote. Rounding out the poll were New England College in seventh (48 points), the University of Maine at Farmington in eighth (32 points), Maine Maritime Academy  in ninth (19 points), and Johnson State College in 10th (18 points).

Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the league's head men's basketball coaches.

The top two teams in the 2015-16 poll competed for the NAC Championship title last season, as Colby-Sawyer came away with an 86-73 victory over Husson. After claiming their first NAC title, the Chargers went on to compete in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the national tournament, Colby-Sawyer saw its season come to a close in a tight matchup with eventual sectional finalists Trinity College, 60-55.

Six of the ten NAC men's basketball teams will kick off their quest for the 2015-16 conference title this weekend. The top six teams in the regular-season conference standings will qualify for the NAC tournament, which gets underway Tuesday, February 23, with quarterfinal action between seeds 3-6. The top two seeds will earn a bye in the first round and will take on the two quarterfinal winners in the semifinals on Friday, February 26. The two semifinal victors will battle for the NAC championship on Saturday, February 27.

2015-16 NAC Men's Basketball Previews

Colby-Sawyer (19-7, 15-3 NAC) is coming off its fourth conference title and first NAC crown since joining the league in 2011-12. The Chargers will once again be led by Bill Foti who enters his 24th season at the helm. The Chargers return three starters from last season including Player and Defensive Player of the Year senior Peter Donato (Portland, Maine; pictured right). He led the team with 14.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Colby-Sawyer also returns All-NAC Second Team honoree senior Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) who poured in 14.1 points per game. Colby-Sawyer begins the season with a pair of games on November 13-14 at a tournament hosted by the University of New England. The Chargers play just two out of nine first semester games at home. 

 

Husson (17-9, 15-3 NAC) veteran head coach Warren Caruso enters his 22nd season at helm of the Eagles. His squad will work toward a return trip to the championship game and to capture the fifth NAC title in the Caruso era. Husson will see the return of their top two scorers from last season's squad in forward Trevon Butler (Waterbury, Conn.; pictured right) for his senior year and guard Raheem Anderson (Miramar, Fla.) for his junior campaign. Newcomers looking to make an early impact on the season include transfer forwards Darryl Wood (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Zach Curran (Washington, D.C.), transfer guard Alonzo McCain (San Bernardino, Calif.) and forward Justin Martin (Winslow, Maine). The Eagles will take on Bowdoin, Saint Joseph's (Maine), Bates, Colby, Springfield and UMass-Dartmouth to prepare for a tough conference schedule. 

 

Castleton (14-13, 11-7 NAC) head coach Paul Culpo enters his seventh season after leading the Spartans to an appearance in the NAC Semifinals last year. The team fell to eventual champion Colby-Sawyer in double overtime to conclude their season in the 2015 NAC Semifinals. The Spartans bring back four of their top five scorers from last year, including senior Chad Copeland (Plainfield, Vt.) and Pavin Parrish (Rochester, Vt.). Copeland led the team in scoring (17.0), rebounding (8.5) and blocks (1.4), while Parrish averaged 10.4 points and 4.4 assists per game. Senior Rob Coloutti (Fair Haven, Vt.; pictured right) is back after leading the NAC with 93 three-point field goals. The Spartans also have eight newcomers fighting for playing time this year. 

 

Thomas (12-14, 10-8 NAC), led by second-year head coach Geoff Hensley, returns five players who started at least 10 games last season. The Terriers will be led by senior guard Levi Barnes (Skowhegan, Maine; pictured right), who led all NAC players in scoring last season at 24.1 points per game. A two-time All-NAC First Team selection and the 2013 NAC Rookie of the Year, Barnes also posted 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game last season. Adam Carlsen (Rockport, Maine), another senior guard, ranked third on the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game, while junior Ian King (Westbrook, Maine) was the team leader in rebounds (5.5 rpg), assists (3.9 apg) and steals (1.8 spg) last season. Newcomers Tyheem Simon (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) and Carlos Gonzalez (Lewiston, Maine) will be looked at to contribute at both ends of the floor. In addition to their rigorous NAC schedule, the Terriers also have tilts with Plymouth State and Colby on the docket plus the annual Charlie Ryan Classic at home prior to Thanksgiving. 

 

Lyndon (11-16, 9-9 NAC) head coach Chris Dorsey enters his second season at the helm of the Hornet squad. Senior Avery King (Pawtucket, R.I.; pictured right), juniors Eric Vargas (Lowell, Mass.) and Jose Berroa (Lawrence, Mass.), and sophomore Robbie Rouelle (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) return from last year's team that made an appearance in the NAC Semifinals. The Hornets will look to those veterans and key newcomers Xavier Colbert (Manassas, Va.), Raymond Monroe (Cranston, R.I.), and Gabe Torres(Woodland, Calif.) to make a return to the NAC tournament this year. 

 

Green Mountain (8-16, 7-11 NAC) will look to build upon last year's growth in 2015-16 under second-year head coach Anthony Leonelli. The Eagles return eight players including four starters. Senior forward Cameron Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.; pictured right) returns after leading the conference in rebounding and ranking fourth in scoring last season. He will be supported in the front court by junior import Javier Lugris (Madrid, Spain), while sophomore three-point marksman Boo Agee (Waynesboro, Va.) and junior defensive stalwart Darius Wynn (Charlottesville, Va.) will fill out the back court. A promising pair of incoming freshmen wing players, Nikolaos Maragkidis (Athens, Greece) and Pierce Weatherspoon (Wethersfield, Conn.), along with transfer guard Dan Ginsberg(Charlottesville, Va.)  will add to the return of Robert Holloway (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) and Terry Jones (Pearl, Miss.) from year-long absences to provide a solid core. Keene State, Plymouth State and Pine Manor will comprise Green Mountain's top non-conference opponents. 

 

New England College (14-12, 11-7 NAC) will look to build off of last season under the guidance of 14th-year head coach Charlie Mason. The Pilgrims earned home court for the opening round of the NAC tournament for the first time in their NAC history, but fell to Lyndon 63-59 in quarterfinal action. NEC returns NAC First Team All-Conference honoree from a season ago, junior Dezron Wilson (Hartford, Conn.; pictured right). Wilson led the team in scoring as he averaged 16.4 points per game. Also, returning for NEC will be sophomore guard CJ Capilets (Hauppauge, N.Y.) who averaged 9.7 points per game and sophomore guard Dondre James (Whitman, Mass.) who averaged 7.32 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game. NEC will also look to a talented group of incoming freshmen to make an immediate impact. 

 

UMaine-Farmington (9-16, 8-10 NAC) veteran head coach Dick Meader enters his 23rd season at the helm of UMF men's basketball and only needs 13 wins to surpass 300 career-win mark at UMF. The Beavers return seven players from last season, including senior captains Logan Nichols (Minot, Maine; pictured right) and Nick Hilton (Wilton, Maine). UMaine-Farmington plays Bates, Bowdoin, Saint Joseph's College (Maine), and the University of New England in the heart of the non-conference schedule. 

 

Maine Maritime (3-22, 2-16 NAC) will be led by second-year head coach David Muchnick. Eight players return to the Mariner squad, including four starters. Juniors Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) and Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) along with sophomores Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine; pictured right) and Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) will look to lead Maine Maritime. Freshman Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) and Dennis "DJ" Harris (Vallejo, Calif.) will look to make an immediate impact. The Mariners will compete against Southern Maine, United States Merchant Marine Academy, Bowdoin and Colby as a few of the team's top non-conference opponents. 

 

Johnson State (3-22, 3-15) will look to lay down a solid foundation under first-year head coach Miles Smith. The Badgers return five players including one starter from last season. Senior guard Greg Davis (Philadelphia, Penn.), senior forward Asim Khan (Torrance, Calif.; pictured right) and junior guards Terrence Manning (Providence, R.I.), Wyatt Larose (Providence, R.I.), and Vernon Slator (Washington, D.C.) return, while Rahim Bunch (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), Rasul Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.), Ben Holl (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Amari Moulton (Philadelphia, Pa.) will look to lead the incoming group. Johnson State will take on Amherst, Middlebury, and Williams to prepare for a tough NAC schedule.
