Johnson Falls Short to Southern Vermont

BENNINGTON, VT. – The Johnson State College men's basketball team fell to Southern Vermont College 95-84 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night.

The Badgers drop to 2-2 on the season, while Southern Vermont evens up to 2-2.

1st Half

After staying even for the first ten minutes of the half, the Mountaineers went on a 15-1 run over a five-minute span to take a 37-26 lead with five minutes remaining in the period. The Badgers were able to claw back and entered the half down 47-43. Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del.) led the Badgers in the half with 15 points, while Demetrius Slade (Washington, D.C.) hauled in eight rebounds.

2nd Half

Southern Vermont started the half on a 22-12 run to take a 69-57 lead midway through the period. The Mountaineers took their largest lead of the contest with four minutes left in the period, when they led 92-71. Johnson was able to chip away at the lead down the stretch with a 13-2 run, but were unable to make the full comeback and fell 95-84. Kawaun Chavis (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Badgers through the second half with 13 points, while Benjamin Holl (Philadelphia, Pa.) added eight more.

Johnson Leaders

Chavis led Johnson with 20 points, with Wynn tacking on 18 more along with three steals. Slade led the Badgers with 13 rebounds and four assists. Holl recorded 14 points, including a team high three three-pointers.

Southern Vermont Leaders

Richard Taylor led all scorers with 25 points and pulled in eight rebounds. Nate Goldsmith recorded a game high 14 rebounds and scored 18.

Stat Breakdown

The Mountaineers shot 50% from the field to Johnson's 39.1%, while also outrebounding the Badgers 44-39. Johnson was better from beyond the arc, with a 40.9%-21.7% advantage in three-point percentage. Southern Vermont forced more turnovers by a margin of 22-17, scoring 27 off of them to Johnson's 10.
