Panthers Hold Off Badgers

MIDDLEBURY, VT. – The Johnson State College men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Middlebury College 99-83 on Wednesday evening.

The Badgers drop to 2-3 on the season, while Middlebury improves to 5-1.

1st Half

The Badgers stayed even through a majority of the first half, trailing 26-25 with seven minutes remaining in the period. The Panthers went on a 24-10 run to close out the half to take a 50-35 lead into the break. Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del.) led Johnson in the half with 13 points, while Demetrius Slade (Washington, D.C.) caused havoc on the defensive end with four steals.

2nd Half

Middlebury jumped out to a quick start in the second half, extending their lead to 24 four minutes in. The Badgers chipped away through the remainder of the frame, but were unable to overcome the early deficit and fell 99-83. Kawaun Chavis (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Badgers through the second half with 12 points, while Benjamin Holl (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Wynn added ten more each.

Johnson Leaders

Wynn led Johnson with 23 points, with Chavis tacking on 19 more. Slade led the Badgers with 6 steals, 3 blocks and three assists.

Middlebury Leaders

Matt St. Amour led the Panthers with 20 points, while Jack Daly hauled in 13 rebounds and dished out 11 assists.

Stat Breakdown

The Panthers shot 54.5% from the field to Johnson's 46%, while also outrebounding the Badgers 46-28. Johnson was better from beyond the arc, with a 47.1%-36.8% advantage in three-point percentage. Middlebury's bench outshot Johnson's by a margin of 31-11.

Johnson will travel to New England College on Saturday, December 3rd for their first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
