Johnson Stopped by UMaine-Farmington, 78-71

FARMINGTON, MAINE – The Johnson State College men's basketball team fell to UMaine-Farmington 78-71 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers fall to 7-12 on the season and 4-8 in the NAC, while the Badgers improve to 8-10 on the season and 7-5 in the conference.

1st Half

The score stayed close through much of the first half, with the Beavers holding the largest lead for either team, seven, midway through the period. Johnson took control in the final minutes, taking a 35-30 lead into the intermission. Jeyquan Johnson (Harlem, N.Y.) and Benjamin Holl (Philadelphia, Pa.) each picked up seven in the half to lead the Badgers.

2nd Half

UMaine-Farmington regained the lead four minutes into the second half. The teams traded leads over the next four minutes, before the Beavers went on a 14-2 run to go up 67-56 with 5:53 remaining. The Badgers got the score as close as 74-69 with just over a minute remaining, but were unable to complete the comeback and fell 78-71. Kawaun Chavis (Philadelphia, Pa.) picked up 12 points in the half to lead Johnson.

Johnson Leaders

Four Johnson starters picked up double-digit points, with Chavis' 15 leading the way. Johnson (14), Holl (13) and Demetrius Slade (Washington, D.C.) (11) were Johnson's other double-digit scorers.

UMaine-Farmington Leaders

Amir Moss and Tyus Ripley each picked up a game high 18 points, with Ripley also recording eight rebounds. Riley Robinson added 17 more and also hauled in eight rebounds.

Stat Breakdown

The Beavers outshot Johnson 58.9% to 42.4% from the field, while Johnson held a 38.9% to 28.6% edge beyond the arc. UMaine-Farmington shot 90.9% (10-11) from the free throw line, compared to Johnson's 16.7% (1-6). Johnson committed just 11 turnovers, while forcing 17.
