Chavis Drops 30 in Season Ending Victory Over Castleton

CASTLETON, VT. – The Johnson State College men's basketball team defeated Castleton University 75-63 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers finish the season with an 11-14 overall record 8-10 record in the NAC, while the Spartans move to 16-8 on the season and 11-7 in the conference.

1st Half

The Badgers jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first seven and a half minutes. Johnson held their lead through the remainder of the half, taking a 28-19 lead into the break.

2nd Half

Johnson pushed their lead to double-digits in the early minutes of the second half, and kept the Spartans from cutting the lead below ten through the remainder of the game. The Badgers outscored Castleton 47-44 in the second to take the 75-63.

Johnson Leaders

Kawaun Chavis (Philadelphia, Pa.) picked up a season-high 30 points to lead all scorers. Jeyquan Johnson (Harlem, N.Y.) added 12 points while Benjamin Holl (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 11. Demetrius Slade (Washington, D.C.) hauled in a team high nine rebounds.

Castleton Leaders

Casey Belade led Castleton off the bench with 16 points, with Chad Copeland added 11 more. Edmund Fitzgerald picked up a game-high 10 rebounds.

Stats Breakdown

Castleton outshot Johnson from the field by a 40.6% to 37.5% margin, while the Badgers shot 29.0% from beyond the arc to the Spartans 19.0%. Castleton outrebounded Johnson 45-36, while the Badgers forced 14 turnovers while committing 10.

Season Finale

Despite the victory, Johnson was eliminated from the NAC playoffs due to Colby-Sawyer's victory over New England College on Saturday.
