Badgers Fall to Beacons in Season Opener
The University of Massachusetts Boston men's lacrosse team broke from a two-goal halftime lead by scoring eight times in the third quarter in posting a 17-1 non-conference victory over Johnson State College Saturday afternoon at Boston College High School.
 
John Powers scored four consecutive goals in the third quarter and Dom Ficherea struck three times, both also assisting on a goal in the period for UMass Boston (3-2). It was the season-opener for Johnson State.
 
After Matthew Malek tied the game for the Badgers with 42 seconds left in the first quarter, Johnson State was held scoreless the rest of the match. The Beacons finished with a 70-13 advantage in shots.
 
Sophomore Craig Frehill was credited with the win in goal for UMass. He made three saves before giving way to freshmen AJ Collette and James Bischoff , who finished up in net.
 
In his collegiate debut, Jay Palmisano of Johnson State (0-1) stopped 26 shots, nine in the second quarter when he limited the hosts to just two goals.
 
Fichera led UMass with five goals and Powers totaled four goals and two assists.
 
UMass visits Florida Southern College Tuesday at 4 p.m. while Johnson State travels to Becker Sunday at 1 p.m.
