JOHNSON, Vt. – Visiting Colby-Sawyer College picked up a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over host Johnson State College on Sunday by the margin of 3-0 at Minaert Field. The Chargers improve to 5-9-1, 3-3-1 NAC while Johnson dips to 4-9-1, 1-6 NAC.
The Chargers received goals from Chris DiCecca (Wilmington, Mass.), Kevin Flaherty (Wilmington, Mass.), and Mike Laskowski (Fremont, N.H.) while Alex Ortega (Milton, Vt.) dealt out a pair of assists on the afternoon.
Winning keeper Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) made three saves in the shutout while Ryan Belen (Northvale, N.J./Northern Valley) recorded eight stops.
DiCecca put C-SC on the board with just under 20 minutes left to play in the first half when Ortega floated a corner kick towards the far post the DiCecca timed well and headed home past a diving Belen making the score 1-0.
Flaherty would give the Chargers a 2-0 lead just 1:13 into the second half with a long drive off a dead ball that found its way just under the crossbar.
Off another dead ball, just outside the penalty box and near the end line, Ortega would drop a pass back to Laskowski who calmly trapped the ball and drilled a shot past a helpless Belen to provide the 3-0 final.
Johnson moves on to play at Castleton State on Wednesday at 6:30 pm while Colby-Sawyer plays host to Husson University on Saturday at 3:30 pm in their next contest.
The contest marked the final regular-season home match for seven JSC seniors: Ryan Joy (North Montpelier, Vt./U-32), Ryan Demars (Morrisville, Vt./Peoples), Peter Wanjiku (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington), Granger Gosnell (Peru, N.Y./Peru), Peter Leblanc (Worcester, Mass./Abby Kelley Foster), Chad Koenig (Warren, Vt./Harwood), and Gai Gai (Burlington, Vt./Burlington).
