Johnson drills Fisher for first win

JOHNSON, Vt. – Johnson State College men's soccer won their first contest of the year by defeating non-conference visitor Fisher College on Saturday 11-0.  Johnson now stands at 1-8 overall, 0-2 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while Fisher dips to 0-7 overall.

Freshman Griffin Dunne (Cambridge, Vt./Lamoille) (pictured #7) scored three goals and notched two assists while freshman Dylan Dalmata (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) aided the scoring attack with two goals. The Badgers attack produced single goals from: sophomore Keegan Hanlon (North Haven, Conn./North Haven), freshman Brendan Mulhern (Durham, N.H./Oyster River), freshman Zach Baughn (Clayton, N.Y./LaFargeville Central), junior Matt Merullo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), sophomore Noi Jones (Morrisville, Vt./Peoples), and sophomore Josh King (St. Albans, Vt./BFA-St. Albans). The Badgers compiled nine assists on the afternoon with sophomore Matt Boltzer (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) and King each recording two assists on the afternoon while Jones, Hanlon, and junior Ryan Belen (Northvale, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) each fueled the Badger offense with one apiece.

Dunne put the Badgers on the board in the tenth minute, dribbling through the Fisher College defense and driving a shot past goalie Steven Masterson (Berkley, Mass.) to the lower left corner of the net. Dunne would score again twenty six seconds later on a through ball from Matt Boltzer, to score his second goal of the afternoon giving the Badgers an early 2-0 lead. In the game's thirty fourth minute Matt Merullo scored on a through ball from Josh King, finishing with a blistering shot bottom right. King would then get into the scoring action himself with a little under three minutes remaining in the first half. Johnson would end the half with four goals on twenty three shots.

Johnson kept up the rapid scoring pace set in the first half as Dunne capped off his hat trick by scoring on a through ball assisted by Keegan Hanlon. Dunne then returned the favor ten minutes later as he assisted on a through ball to Hanlon, who later carried the ball past the keeper, Masterson to score the Badger's sixth goal. Four minutes later Brendan Mulhern scored unassisted off a direct kick from 30 yards out that skipped off the Masterson's hands into the net; this gave the Badgers a 7-0 edge. Dylan Dalmata would then add a pair of goals during the game's seventy seventh and eighty first minutes respectively. With little under five minutes remaining in the contest Zach Baughn added his name to the scoring column as he took a cross pass from Josh King and placed it in the lower right half of the net. After Baughn's goal Johnson led 10-0. Noi Jones would then cap off the scoring attack for the Badgers as he drilled a ball from the eighteen that found a hole past a diving Masterson. This goal concluded the Badgers scoring and they rolled on to an 11-0 victory.

Johnson sophomore Alex Pakatar (Troy, N.Y./LaSalle) started the match in net for the Badgers. However, at halftime he was relieved by Regan Dunbar (Winthrop, N.Y./Brasler Falls), the Badger's goalies would combine on a shutout for the Badgers, their first of the season. Steven Masterson made 14 saves for Fisher College in the loss.

JSC moves on to play a non-conference match at Norwich University, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm while Fisher will host Maine-Fort Kent next Sunday at 3:30 pm.
