Trailblazers Blank Badgers in Season Opener

The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) men's soccer team shutout Johnson State 3-0 on Friday afternoon in both teams' season opener at the Norwich Cadet Kickoff Classic.The Badgers stand 0-1, 0-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while the Trailblazers kickoff their season 1-0, 0-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC).

Johnson State held MCLA off until the 20th minute of play when freshman forward Dylan Pereira placed a shot to the right post to beat Johnson keeper Ryan Belen. Fifteen minutes later, Pereira delivered an unassisted goal to give the Trailblazers a 2-0 lead, which they would take into the halftime.  

MCLA's Robert Dalby would tally the lone second half goal scoring off of a direct kick in the 65th minute.  Junior Josh King tallied two shots for the Badgers while freshman Pedro Perez contributed one shot. Trailblazers would outshoot Johnson 30-3 over the ninety minutes.

Goalkeeper Matt Robinson earned the shutout victory, facing three shots and turning away one.  Belen finished with an impressive 14 saves for Johnson in a losing effort.

Johnson will face host Norwich University tomorrow at 1:00pm while MCLA will challenge Green Mountain in the second day of the classic.
