The SUNY Canton men's soccer team used a balanced offensive attack to win their fourth straight contest, 4-0, against visiting Johnson State College Wednesday evening. The win improves the Kangaroos to 7-5, while the loss drops the Badgers to 0-12.
The hosts got on the board first just 7:16 into the contest when Hunter Mowery fed Prince Adjei who beat Badger goalie Sam Martin in the lower left corner for his fourth goal of the season. Five minutes later Abdoulie Jawara fed a ball up the left hand side to Nick Escalante who collected it and cut back to the right placing a shot off the inside of the right post for the 2-0 lead.
In the 27th minute the Roos were back at it again this time with Escalante setting up the attack. The sophomore took the ball down the left sideline and hesitated as he delivered a beautiful ball to Devin Gruneisen in the box. Gruneisen fired a shot on net that was initially saved by Martin, but he was able to put home the rebound for the three-goal lead.
SUNY Canton held edges in the opening half in shots (9-2), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (6-0). The Roos took a 3-0 lead on the scoreboard into intermission.
Six minutes out of break the Roos tacked on their fourth score of the game when Tyler Gallagher fed Abdulai Jagana. Jagana took the ball up the middle as he sprinted toward net and struck a low liner off the inside of the left post for his fifth marker of the season.
The Roos dominated play in the game with heavy advantages in shots (22-4), shots on goal (12-3) and corner kicks (11-1). Escalante led the attack with six shots target. Twenty different players saw time in the game for SUNY Canton. Evan Drew made three saves in his sixth win and third shutout of the season, while Martin stopped eight shots for Johnson State.
Canton will put its four game winning streak on the line Saturday when it hosts Alfred State at 1:00 p.m. while the Badgers travel to conference opponent Thomas College for a 3:30p.m. game on Saturday.
