Chargers Roll Past Johnson 8-1

The Colby-Sawyer College men's soccer team received a goal from eight different players and extend its winning streak to seven after an 8-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Johnson State on a cold Sunday afternoon.

The Chargers improve to 10-4-1 overall, which are the most wins since the 2002 squad won 12 matches. Colby-Sawyer also improves to 6-1 in the NAC and stand alone in first place. Johnson State falls to 4-10-1 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

The scoring started off in rare fashion in the sixth minute for the Chargers. Sophomore Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand) took a corner kick and bent the ball by everyone and into the far portion of the goal.

Senior Alex Ortega gave Colby-Sawyer a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute with his eighth goal of the season.

After holding a 2-0 lead into halftime, the Chargers did not wait long to make it 3-0 as freshman Eddie Garcia put home his second goal of the season at 46:32 off a feed from fellow freshman Denali Sexton.

Four minutes later, freshman Mohamed Jafar and freshman Kyle Millington scored their first collegiate goals 58 seconds apart.

Freshman Pedro Basaca added his first collegiate tally at 60:20 to give Colby-Sawyer a 6-0 lead.

Johnson State broke through for a goal in the 69th minute. Senior Cory Chase headed his sixth goal into the back of the net off a corner kick from fellow senior Keegan Hanlon

Denali Sexton added to his team leading goal total with his 10th of the season in the 71st minute, while freshman Alex Waterbury ended the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 86th minute. Senior Max Yee was credited with assists on both goals.

Senior Nick Austin made three saves in the win for Colby-Sawyer, while Johnson State keeper Alex Pakatar had seven saves for the Badgers.

Johnson returns to action next weekend against Lydon St. at 3:30pm in Lyndonville for the team's last regular season game.
