Badgers Fall to Newbury College

JOHNSON, VT. – The Johnson State College men's soccer team fell to Newbury College 8-1 in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at Minaert Field. The Badgers drop to 1-2 overall, while Newbury remains perfect at 3-0.

SCORING

1st Half: - The Nighthawks got on the board early with a goal by Alex Strafer in the third minute, assisted by Ethan Forrest. Newbury Struck again five minutes later, when German Canales scored off a feed by Strafer. Forrest netted the third Nighthawk goal in the 22nd minute to push the lead to 3-0. Dominic Caforia (Waterbury, Vt.) scored his fourth goal of the young season in the 34th minute to pull the Badgers within two going into the half.

2nd Half: Newbury brought the lead back to three less than a minute into the second when Alex Davis scored to bring the game to 4-1. In the 63rd minute, Newbury pushed the lead to 5-1 on a goal by Nilton De Andrade, assisted by Ethan Weinstein. Newbury tacked on three more goals, including two by Josiah Simko, in the final ten minutes to bring the final score to 8-1.

GOALKEEPERS

Gerrit Lane (Moretown, Vt.) started in net and was tagged with the loss for the Badgers, stopping 11 of 14 shots. Lane was relieved for the second half by Andrew Baker (Carthage, N.Y.), who stopped 7 of 12. Casey Cisero picked up the win in net, recording four saves. Chris Tran relieved Cisero for the final 11 minutes.

The Badgers travel to North Adams, Mass. next weekend for the CIAO Classic. The Badgers take on MCLA on Saturday, followed by a match with Union (N.Y.) on Sunday.
