MSOC: Badgers Sweep Opening Weekend with 7-0 Win Over UMPI

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Johnson State College men's soccer team defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Minaert Field. Joseph Holloway (Essex County, England) notched two goals in the win for Johnson (2-0, 0-0 NAC) for the second consecutive game.

SCORING

1st Half:Christopher Trivieres (Georgia, Vt.) opened the scoring for Johnson, converting on a heel kick feed from Caforia in front of the UMPI (0-2, 0-0) goal to take a 1-0 lead. Collin Campbell (Killington, Vt.) made it 2-0 under six minutes later when he collected a rebound off a Jarod Croteau (Loudonville, N.Y.) shot that was initially saved by the goaltender and buried it into the back of the net.

Dominic Caforia (Waterbury, Vt.) picked up his second goal of the season in the 29th minute when he connected on another heel kick following a shot off the post. Holloway picked up his first when a misplayed UMPI ball found his feet and he fired a shot past the diving goaltender.

2nd Half: Rob Buonanno (Wolcott, Vt.) extended the Johnson lead two minutes into the second when a Caforia free kick ricocheted off the goal keeper and right to Buonanno who easily tapped in the goal. Holloway picked up his second in the 74th minute when he got behind the defense, made a defender miss and beat the goalie between the legs to put Johnson up 6-0. Hunter Buffum (Jamaica, Vt.) finished the scoring in the final minute when a header off a corner kick grazed off the post and right to Buffum who deflected the ball off the goalie and in for the 7-0 victory.

GOALKEEPERS

Gerrit Lane (Moretown, Vt., 2-0) took the win for Johnson, making two saves in 45 minutes of work. Marcus Holmes (Johnson, Vt.) relieved Lane in the second half and didn't face a shot on goal. Matt Manter (0-2) took the loss for UMPI, allowing five goals on 17 shots before Chris King came in for the final 20 minutes and allowed two goals on four shots.
