MSOC: Spartans Drop Johnson 6-0

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Johnson State College men's soccer team fell to Castleton University 6-0 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Tuesday afternoon.

SCORING

1st Half: Seraphin Iradukunda opened the scoring just over five minutes into the first half when Jacob Godfrey sent a long cross to the left side of the goal, where Iradukunda fired it into the top left corner of the net. Derek Blouin headed home a free kick from Jack Kingdon in the 22nd minute to extend the Spartans' lead to 2-0. Just over a minute later, Godfrey powered home a cross from Thomas Kirk as Castleton went up 3-0 at the 22:58 mark of the opening frame.

In the 37th minute, Jack Kingdon powered a free kick from 35 yards out that skipped through traffic in front and tucked inside the right goal post. A late foul inside the box gave Kirk a penalty-kick opportunity, and he took advantage by slipping a low shot to the left side as Castleton held a 5-0 lead at the half.

 2nd Half: Castleton scored their only goal of the second when Tatenda Shumba controlled the ball deep near the left corner before sending a cross in front, where Nick Kaiafas drilled it home for the one-touch goal to cap the scoring at the 60-minute mark of the match.

Aaron Parker (8-6-2) shutout the Badgers with two saves in the first half. Alex Fernald preserved the team shutout with one save over the final 45 minutes. Ryan Willette (Wolfeboro, N.H.; 0-2) and Marcus Holmes (Johnson, Vt.) split halves in goal for Johnson, with Willette being tagged with the loss.
