Badgers Drop Opening Match 6-3

The Green Mountain College men's tennis team opened up the regular season with a 6-3 non-conference victory over Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.

The Eagles earned two victories in doubles play and then clinched the victory by claiming four of the six singles matches.

GMC's Jack Hepburn played near perfect tennis as he kept his opponents off the score card. The senior posted an 8-0 victory in second flight doubles with partner Grey McCampbell against the Badgers' pairing of Cole Hennessy and Zach Baughn and then reeled off a pair of 6-0 set victories in third flight singles over Alex Pakatar.

The Eagles' team of Connor Braden and Nate Berner-Tobin combined to earn an 8-1 victory in their match against the Badgers' duo of Gerrit Lane and Cole Hennessy in number one doubles play. Braden continued on in first flight singles to post a straight sets win over Lane, 6-1, 6-1 while Berner-Tobin bested Hennessy in second flight singles with scores of 6-2, 6-3.

Johnson produced its first match victory in third flight doubles as Greg Davis and Alex Harcourt teamed up to get past the Eagles' Eric Wadeand Adrian Torres, 8-2. Davis got the better of Wade in number five singles with a straight sets win, 6-1, 6-4. The Badgers' Nihad Basic posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Torres in sixth flight singles.

The Eagles' McCampbell got past Baughn 6-2, 6-0 in fourth flight singles to round out the scoring on the afternoon.

Green Mountain will return to the hardcourts next Saturday as they line up for a home match against Lyndon State College at 2 p.m. Johnson has a quick turnaround before its next match tomorrow at Castleton State College at 1 p.m.
