Badgers Drop Season Opener to Castleton

RUTLAND, VT. – The Johnson State College men's tennis team lost to Castleton University 9-0 in their first match of the season on Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers start the season 0-1 while the Spartans move to 4-0.

Doubles

The Spartans opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of doubles pairings, as all three Spartan teams were victorious 8-0. Seth Marcil and Quentin Barthe teamed up to beat Gerrit Lane (Moretown, Vt.) and Richie Perez (Belmont, N.H.), while Ryan Mulder and Trevor Hanna took down Alex Harcourt (Colton, N.Y.) and Benjamin Holl (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the No. 2 position. Jared Wheeler and Brody Wagner picked up an 8-0 decision over Matthew Fogg (Morrisville, Vt.) and Evan Daigneault (Newfane, Vt.).

Singles

Castleton took all six matches of singles play. Lane fell in No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Harcourt also dropped a straight sets match in number two singles 6-0, 6-0. In third flight singles action, Perez was bested in straight 6-0 sets.

Fogg fell in his No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-0. Holl and Daigneault finished off singles with losses in No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
