Badgers Battle Trailblazers in Conference Play

NORTH ADAMS, MA- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson men's tennis team closed out weekend play on Sunday afternoon against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. MCLA came away winning by a score of 7-2. With the win MCLA improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Badgers drop their second consecutive conference match and fall to 0-6 overall.

DOUBLES

Austin Walters and John Folsom remained in the No.1 singles spot against the Trailblazers. They faced off against Cal Najimy and Matt Bluteau in a close-knit match as they fell by a score of 8-6. Colin Compagna and Trevor Newton competed in the No. 2 doubles spot but were outplayed losing the match by a score of 8-2. Kenneth Chandler and Donell Shaw were outplayed as the Trailblazers earned their third point of the afternoon in an 8-4 decision.

SINGLES

Walters faced off against Najimy in No.1 singles and eventually was overcome falling by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Folsom was next for the Badgers, capitalizing on the first win of the afternoon as he defeated Bluteau by a score of 8-6,6-2. The Trailblazers continued to be strong as they recorded points defeating Compagna, Chandler and Shaw in straight sets. Trevor Newton had a strong performance as he earned his first career singles victory. Newton represented the Badgers in No.5 singles winning in a deciding set before splitting the first two sets by scores of 7-5, 4-6.

The Badgers are off until Saturday, April 13 when they host Thomas College in conference play.
