Badgers Edged In President's Cup Challenge Matchup on Senior Day

STOWE, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson men's tennis team were edged in the President's Cup Challenge tennis match on Saturday afternoon. Northern Vermont University-Lyndon hornets capitalized in singles action winning four of the six matches. With the win NVU-Lyndon clinched a playoff spot in the North Atlantic Conference Championship on Saturday, April 27.

DOUBLES

The senior duo of Austin Walters and John Folsom represented the Badgers in No.1 doubles. They faced off against the Hornet's Neal Mulligan and Patrick Wickstrom. The two teams faced off earlier in the week as Wickstrom and Mulligan made quick work of the Badger duo winning 8-2. Folsom and Walters were strong in the match but were edged by a score of 8-6.

Trevor Newton and Kenneth Chandler came out strong capitalizing on every rally of the match and they took the convincing 8-1 win in doubles play for the Badgers. Patrick Bell and Donell Shaw competed in No.3 doubles against Abukar Hassan and Zach Falkenburg. Hassan and Falkenburg took the final doubles match of the afternoon winning 8-4.

 

SINGLES

Walters and Wickstrom met in No.1 singles and forced a deciding set but it was Wickstrom who came out on top. Mulligan controlled his match in No.2 singles beating Folsom by a score of 6-1,6-1. It was Newton who earned the first win of the day for the Badgers in singles play as he beat Mukhtar Sheikh Abdullahi by a score of 6-1,7-5. Colin Compagna dropped his only match of the afternoon as he represtened the Badgers in No.4 singles against Kyle Leighton. Leighton capitalized but Compagna forced the match into a deciding set. Chandler won in No.5 singles beating the Hornet's Jeremy Polina by a score of 6-1, 6-3. In the final match of the afternoon Donell Shaw controlled the match winning by a score of 6-2, 6-4 but it wasn't enough as NVU-Lyndon won the match by an overall score of 5-4.

The Badgers head to Castleton University for a non-conference match on Monday, April 22. The match will begin at 4:00pm.
