Badgers Drop Season Opener to Bears 3-0

JOHNSON, Vt.-The Northern Vermont University-Johnson men's volleyball team host the SUNY Potsdam Bears in the team's first match of the 2020 season in Carter Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Bears earned the win over the Badgers in straight sets.

The Bears took three straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-14.

Senior Jesse Streeter led the Badgers with six kills on 14 total attacks earning a kill percentage of 0.214. Ryan Willette earned four kills and had a team high five digs and Dominic Phelps added two kills to conclude the top performers for the Badgers. 

The Bears opened up the first set on a 12-8 run and continued to control the lead. The Badgers made a run of their own but could not capitalized and the Bears took set one by a score of 25-19. 

In the second set the Badgers opened up a 9-5 run off a strong performance from Willette. Midway through the set the Bears knotted the score at 15-15. With the scored tied at 22-22 three straight Badger errors gave the Bears set number two. 

The Bears cruised to the victory in the final set and were led on the evening by Zaire Rogers who recorded a match high 10 kills and 11 digs. Kiernan Morgan added five kills and two digs.

With the loss the Badgers drop to 0-1 on the season and will host Colby Sawyer College tomorrow in back to back matches at 11:00am and 1:00pm.
