Jason Madrid Organizes Doubles Volleyball Cancer Research Tournament

DENVER, CO.-Jason Madrid of the Northern Vermont University-Johnson men's volleyball program organized the third annual Charity Doubles Volleyball Cancer Research Tournament in Denver, Colorado this past week.

The tournament featured 90 teams from the state of Colorado. The tournament offered co-ed sand volleyball matches and both men's and women's grass volleyball matches with each participant over the age of 18. Each year the committee that puts on the tournament chooses a type of cancer that has had limited research for a cure. In 2019 the event hosted 25 teams and earned a total of $1,500. This year's event was record breaking as they raised a total of $5,000.

The biggest reason I got involved in running this event was because grandma died from Bile-duct cancer," said Madrid. "There wasn't much research about the cancer as it is very rare, so what I wanted to do is find a way to raise money for different research in a fun way. I decided to raise money through volleyball. It is important to me because I don't want to see anyone go through what my grandma did."

This year's charity earnings went towards prostate cancer research. You can stay up to date with Jason and the rest of the Doubles Volleyball Cancer Research Tournament on Twitter at: @CancerDoubles
