Badgers End Season with a Split

The Johnson State College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Minaert Field. The Badgers lost their first game against SUNY Potsdam 12-3 and then picked up a 7-3 victory to close out the season. Johnson concludes its campaign with a 7-19 record overall.

The Bears wasted no time securing the lead with a single run in the top of the first thanks to a Katie Marsman single. Carina Chirinko crossed the plate before the Badgers could tag her out in a run down at home. 

Postdam held the Badgers off during their at bat, and used a huge fifth inning to score half of their runs, sparked by a crucial steal from Sami Hubinsky. 

The Bears registered eleven hits to Johnson's seven, and the Badgers saw runs from Alex Bean, Andrea Williams and Connor Kelsey . The Bear's hurler faced 20 pitchers while Connor Kelsey and Kaitlynn Woodward saw 37 batters. 

GAME 2: Johnson 7 SUNY Potsdam 3

Johnson turned things around in game two, thanks to Bean, Anna Bingham and Shannon Grier who all notched two runs each. Andrea williams tallied one run for the Badgers in their winning effort. 

The Badgers scored early, posting four runs in the bottom of the first. Grier sent a homer over the fence with bases loaded to give the hosts a comforatble lead. Both teams held each other scoreless in the second inning. 

Chirinko tripled for the Bears at the top of the third to send Jordan Ott home for the Bears first scoring play of the day. The Badgers sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth when doubles from Bingham and Grier pulled two more runs in. Ahead 6-1, the Badgers snuck one more run in before the close of the inning. The Bears would go on to see two more cross home, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
