SB: Johnson Drops Two to Thomas in NAC Opener

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Johnson State College softball team fell to Thomas College 10-2 and 13-0 in their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1: THOMAS COLLEGE 10, JOHNSON 2

Early in the bottom of the first, Anna Piirainen scored on a wild pitch to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.  The Badgers tied the game back up at 1-1 in the following frame as Kaitlynn Woodward (White River, Vt.) knocked a solo homerun to right field for Johnson.

The Terriers took the lead back with seven unanswered runs including a six-run third inning.  Sydney LeBourveau, Lauren Farina, and Julia Nadeau led the surge with RBI singles.

The Badgers added their second run of the game in the top of the fourth as Woodward once again sent a solo homerun to right field.  The Terriers tacked on one more in the fourth and fifth on a RBI double by Kayla Bess and a RBI single from Farina.

Pitching

LeBourveau took the win on the mound in five innings, allowing three hits and two runs.  Haley Littlefield threw one hitless inning of relief. Woodward shouldered the loss for Johnson, scattering 11 hits and ten runs (five earned).

GAME 2: THOMAS COLLEGE 13, JOHNSON 0

The Terriers plated four runs in the first inning led by RBI doubles from Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.) and MacKenzie Oberholzer.  Thomas added another run in the second frame on a RBI double by LeBourveau.

In the third, the Thomas offense exploded for eight runs to finish the scoring at 13-0.  Oberholzer, Lexi Colpack, and Piirainen all doubled in the inning to bring in runs.  LeBourveau completed her first career cycle with a two-run homerun to right center.

Pitching

Coulter earned her tenth victory in the circle for the Terriers, allowing one hit in three innings.  Breanna Whitmarsh and Camille Coyne each threw a scoreless inning of relief. Mikaela Magnant was given the loss in 2.1 innings, allowing 13 this and 11 runs.  Woodward pitched 1.2 innings of relief, surrendering six hits and two runs.
