SB: Castleton Takes Doubleheader Sweep Over Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Johnson State College softball team fell to Castleton University 12-2 and 7-3 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

GAME 1: CASTLETON 12, JOHNSON 2

The Spartans went up 1-0 in the top of the first with an RBI single by Devin Millerick. The Badgers answered back and took the lead in the bottom of the inning, with Emily Marshall (Malone, N.Y.) scoring the tying run on a Mikaela Magnant (Franklin, Vt.) groundout and a Lindsey LaPerle (Bethel, Vt.) RBI double down the right field line to plate Kaitlynn Woodward (White River, Vt.) and take the 2-1 advantage.

Castleton took back the lead and extended it in the fourth, exploding for seven runs in the frame to take an 8-2 lead. The Spartans tacked on four more in the sixth to take the 12-2 victory.

Pitching

Taylor Paquette earned the win, throwing six innings and allowing two runs on two hits. Woodward got the loss, allowing 12 runs on 16 hits.

GAME 2: CASTLETON 7, JOHNSON 3 (8 INNINGS)

The Spartans scored two in the top of the first to go up 1-0. Castleton tacked on another in the fourth to take the 3-0 lead. The Badgers answered back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three times to know the game at three. The rally started with an RBI single to left center by LaPerle that brought Abby McRae (Milton, Vt.) in to score. Savannah Dufresne (Swanton, Vt.) followed up with RBI single to right that brought Nicole Mooney (Hillsborough, N.H.) and Woodward in to score.

The teams stayed even into extra innings, where the Spartans scored four in the eighth to take the 7-3 win.

Pitching

Paquette earned her second win of the day, coming in in relief in the fifth inning and allowing no hits and no runs in four innings of work. Magnant got the loss, allowing four earned runs on 17 hits.
