Johnson Tops VTC 57-34 in Season-Opener

RANDOLPH, Vt. - Johnson State College opened up their 2011-12 season on Wednesday night with a 57-34 non-conference women's basketball victory over host Vermont Technical College.  JSC starts 1-0, 0-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while VTC slips to 1-3 overall.

Johnson received a game-high 16 points from senior guard Andrea Deuell (Milton, Vt./Milton) who also added five assists and four rebounds.  Freshman guard Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) had a 15-point outing in her college debut while sophomore forward Jenessa Swainbank (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.  Freshman center KC Cousineau (Bristol, Vt./Mount Abraham) hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds for Johnson.

The Badgers jumped out to an quick lead behind a good offensive transition play and a stingy defense taking a 28-21 lead into halftime.  JSC pulled away in the second half behind an offensive rebounding effort that produced 26 for the night.

The win notched the first for new Head Coach Greg Eckman.

Johnson moves on to play at the Eastern Connecticut State University Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at 5:30 pm against the host school.  JSC will face either Regis College (Mass.) or Montclair State University depending on results for the tournament's opening round.  VTC will not play again until November 30 at 6:00 pm when they play at Nashua Community College.
