Spartans Coast Past Johnson

CASTLETON, Vt. - Visiting Johnson State College saw host Castleton State College roll to a 86-33 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball play Tuesday night at Glenbrook Gymnasium.  The Badgers dip to 4-19, 2-14 NAC while the Spartans improve to 18-4, 15-1 NAC.

Johnson received 15 points from first-year guard Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) (pictured) while senior guard Andrea Deuell (Milton, Vt./Milton) added 12 points and six rebounds.

Castleton forward Vanessa Powers scored a scored a game-high 20 points to go with her nine rebounds while Tarryn Bolognani added 15 points and Alyssa Leonard scored 12.  Heather Murdough and Meghan O'Sullivan each hauled down 11 rebounds off the Spartan bench.

The Spartans held Johnson to just 20% (11-54) shooting on the evening while they knocked down 7-of-13 3-point field goal attempts to fuel the offensive side.

With the score at 11-5 Castleton with 10:52 left in the first half following a Deuell 3-pointer, the Spartans would outscore JSC 34-11 the rest of thef first half to take a decisive 45-16 lead into the halftime and eventually cruise to the win.

Johnson, who will finish outside of the NAC's top eight and therefore not qualify for the post-season tournament, will wrap up their season this weekend with road contests at Husson on Friday and Maine Maritime on Saturday.  Castleton, who holds a two-game lead for the top-spot in the NAC and right to host the post-season tournament, moves on to host New England College on Thursday before finishing their regular-season with a road match up at Colby-Sawyer College.
