Canton defeats Johnson 79-62

JOHNSON, Vt. – Visiting SUNY Canton surged ahead to a double-digit lead in the middle of the first half and kept host Johnson State College at bay for the remainder of the contest to earn a 79-62 women's basketball victory on Tuesday afternoon at Carter Gym.  The Kangaroos even their record at 2-2 on the young season while Johnson stands at 1-2, 0-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC).

Senior forward Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career and racked up game-high's of 28 points and 13 rebounds while doing it.  Junior Alicia Uhlein (Watertown, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and freshman Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, N.Y.) tossed in nine points and had six boards.

Johnson was led by sophomore guard Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt.) and freshman guard Mary Richardson (Vernon, Vt.) (pictured) who each scored 22 points.  Robertson knocked down three 3-pointers and collected three steals while Richardson grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

Canton led 14-11 just over three and half minutes into the contest but a 17-4 surge by the 'Roos pushed the lead out to 16 at 31-15 capped by a 3-point field goal from Uhlein.  Canton would take that same 16-point cushion into halftime leading 44-28 at the intermission.

The Canton lead would swell to 23 early in the second half but the Badgers would claw their way back into it.  After Robertson knocked down a pair of free throw attempts with 7:10 to play the lead had been cut to just six points at 60-54.  But Myers would score a bucket and knock down four consecutive free throws to help push the lead back to double-figures and on to the 17-point win.

For the game Canton would shoot 51% (27-53) from the field while Johnson finished at 31% (20-66).

Johnson will move on to play at Norwich University in their next contest on Sunday, November 25 at 1:00 pm while SUNY Canton will face SUNY Cobleskill on the road on Tuesday, November 27 at 5:00 pm.
