Mariners  Top Badgers 62-45 in NAC Contest

CASTINE, Maine--Maine Maritime Academy tops Johnson State College women's basketball 62-45 Friday night. Johnson slides to 0-7 overall and 2-11 in the NAC while MMA improves to 3-4 overall and 5-7 in the NAC

Lazrin Schenck (Shelburne, Vt. / Champlain Valley Union) led Johnson's offense with 15 points while sophomores Ashley Jones (Jeffersonville, Vt., Lamoille) and Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt. / Burlington) both tallied eight points. Deanna Brandstetter (Newport, Vt. / North Country) also snagged a game-high nine boards for JSC.

Mary Badeen (Newport, Maine / Messalonske) led the Mariners with a career-high 26 points and scored 20 of those points in the first half and shot 9 of 16 from the field, including 7 of 13 from three-point range.  Courtney Dufour (Augusta, Maine/Cony) also contributed 15 points for the Mariners and Casey Everest (Portland, Maine / Deering) scored five two-pointers. 

The Mariners would jump to an early 15-5 lead with 16:02 left. Maine Maritime's Dufour would then go on to bank a 3-pointer three minutes later to give Maine Maritime the advantage 20-7. Johnson then would rally with layups by Schenck and points from  Kirsten Rand (Colchester, Vt. / Colchester) who made it a nine-point game, 20-11, with 10:39 left. 

Dufour would put the Mariners ahead 46-20 early in the second half before the Badgers went on a 15-4 scoring run, spanning almost eight minutes, to close the gap 47-33, with 10:33 left in the game. Jones paced the Johnson State run with six points.

The Mariners then went on to lead by as much as 20, 57-37. The MMA offense would prove to be too much for the Badgers and the buzzer would sound with a final score of 62-45.

Johnson State will wrap up its Maine road trip tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00pm game against NAC foe Husson University while the Mariners will remain at home to host Lyndon State.
