Castleton Powers Past JSC 75-26

Castleton, Vt. – The Johnson State women's basketball team fell 26-75 Thursday evening at Castleton State College.  Johnson State is now 2-13 overall and 0-9 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while the Spartans, who rank #2 in the conference improve to 14-1 on the season and 7-1 in the NAC.

Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt. / Burlington) was the only Badger in double figures with 12 points. Freshman Lazrin Schenck (Shelburne, Vt. / Champlain Valley Union) added two points and a team-high five rebounds.

For the Spartans, freshman Stephanie Linder (Morrisonville, N.Y.) led the Spartans with 12 points and also added seven rebounds, five steals, three assists and one block. Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) also recorded double figures with ten points while Kelly Conway (Rutland, Vt.) chipped in with seven points, five assists and three steals.

Johnson sank the first basket 33 seconds into the game. 18 seconds later Castleton's Linder responded with a lay-up fueling the Spartans' 28-0 run. The Badgers scored with 7:37 left to bring the tally to 28-4. However, Castleton would end the half with a 46-6 advantage.

Leonard led the Castleton offense in the second half, scoring eight of her ten points during a 13-2 run. The string of Spartan scoring was capped by an Ali Jones layup with 11:37 remaining. The bucket made the score 65-10, giving the hosts a 55-point margin, their largest of the night. The Badgers responded with a 10-0 run of their own, getting five points from Robertson, two from Ashley Jones, and a three-pointer from Kassidee Keefe (Derby Line, Vt. / North Country) to make the score 65-20 with 8:03 left in regulation.In the final eight minutes, Castleton outscored Johnson St. 10-6, finishing the game with a 75-26 victory.

Johnson State College will host fellow NAC competitor Green Mountain College Saturday at 3:00pm while Castleton will travel to Lyndon St. to take on the Hornets.
