UMF’s defense stops Johnson State in 70-46 win

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team outscored Johnson State College 54 to 41, rolling to a 70-46 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory on Sunday afternoon. Johnson State fell to 5-17 overall, 2-13 in the NAC while UMaine-Farmington improved to 9-7 in the NAC with the win, 9-13 overall.

Johnson State's Brittany Robertson (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field while Jenessa Swainbank (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) chipped in with seven points off the bench. Emily Jones (Craftsbury, Vt./Craftsbury) paced the Badgers on the glass with seven boards.

Junior Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine/Messalonskee) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead UMaine-Farmington offensively. Lindsay Ranquist (Owls Head, Maine/Medomak Valley) finished with 13 points and also grabbed a career-high seven steals. Freshman Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Regional) came off the bench to add 10 points along with seven rebounds.

After a see-saw first half with four lead changes and two ties, UMaine-Farmington eventually opened up an 11-point halftime lead, 31-20. A 15-2 run by the Beavers lasting nearly seven minutes helped guide UMF to the comfortable lead at the break.

Johnson State was able to cut their host's lead single digit margin but ultimately weren't able to pass the Beavers. UMF's lead reached its widest at 27 points, 70-43, following a layup by guard Shelbee Lancaster (Dexter, Maine/Dexter Regional) with 1:10 to play. The buzzer sounded ending the game with a final tally of 70-46 UMaine-Farmington's advantage.

Johnson State returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Castleton State in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off while UMaine-Farmington will return to the court on Tuesday, Feb. 12, when it faces Husson University in a NAC road game for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
