Balanced Attack Leads Castleton Past Johnson

The Spartans locked down on defense and made timely shots on the way to a 76-48 victory over Johnson St. on Thursday evening in North Atlantic Conference action at Glenbrook Gym.

Castleton had four players in double figures and held the Badgers to just 17.7 percent shooting from the floor and 2-for-19 from downtown to improve to 10-3 and 6-0 in conference play. The Spartans also outrebounded Johnson St. 58-49 and forced 16 turnovers as the Badgers fell to 4-8 and 4-3 in the NAC.

Jade Desroches led four players in double figures with 11 points, ten rebounds, four assists and three steals, despite a poor shooting night. Meghan O'Sullivan scored a team-high 15 points while Makayla Farrara came off the bench to pour in a career-high 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Bryanna DuPont was also in double figures with 11 points and six rebounds.

No Badger scored in double figures as Brittany Robertson recorded a team-high nine points on 2-for-15 shooting while Kasey DeGreenia added eight points, nine rebounds and an assist. Ashley Goddard pulled down seven rebounds but finished with just four points on 2-for-10 shooting.

The Spartans jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the opening two minutes, but Johnson St. countered with the next six points over to tie the game 6-6 at 14:58. Desroches scored and Farrara followed with a triple with 11:52 left for the 11-6 lead. The Badgers pulled within one point two minutes later, but a 5-0 spurt pushed it to 18-11 at 7:51 on a free throw by O'Sullivan. Johnson St. pulled back within four, 20-16, with 6:22 left, but Castleton took control with a 14-3 run over the next four minutes. The Spartans made their free throws in the final two minutes and Desroches found DuPont down low with two seconds left for a 39-22 advantage at the break.

Castleton and Johnson St. traded baskets to open the second before buckets by O'Sullivan and DuPont extended the lead to 49-29 with 14:33 left. A 7-0 run later in the period pushed it to 60-36 at 10:20 and the Spartans made it a 28-point game minutes later on a jumper by Raiche. Castleton's lead didn't drop below 23 over the final seven minutes of action as the Spartans subbed liberally.

Ali Jones was solid with seven points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals while Taylor Raiche added seven points four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Castleton returns to action on Saturday when the team travels to face Lyndon at 3 pm while Johnson will host Green Mountain College on Saturday for a 3:00pm game.
