Second Half Propels Mariners to Victory

Maine Maritime Academy Women's Basketball defeated Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon, 58-49.

The Mariners trailed 7-0 until Mary Badeen closed the gap to 7-6 with a pair of three-pointers to open up the scoring for the hosts. Maine Maritime came close but never held the lead in the first twenty minutes, entering the halftime down, 21-20.

Maine Maritime came out hot in the second half, scoring 12-unanswered points to build a 32-21 lead, the Mariners shot 48.1 percent in the second half to stifle the Badgers, taking their second-straight North Atlantic Conference win.

Following a career-performance last night, Kristi Willey ended the afternoon with 16 points, including 12 in the second half, six rebounds, three assists and a block. Conference-leading scorer Badeen picked up a double-double with 16 points of her own, and 13 rebounds. Maggie McConkey, Jillian Perron(Skowhegan, Maine) and Mackenzie Vosburgh each added eight points for the Mariners.

Brittany Robertson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Badgers, while Kasey DeGreenia added 11 points off the bench and Ashley Goddard pulled down a team-leading 11 boards.

With the pair of victories during Alumni Weekend the Mariners improve to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the NAC, while the Badgers fall to 5-10 and 5-5. 

The Mariners will hit the road next Friday and Saturday to take on Green Mountain and Castleton for a pair of NAC games while Johnson travels to Lyndon on Saturday for a 3:00pm game.
