Goddard Propels Badgers to Home Opener Victory

The Badgers locked down on defense and made timely shots on the way to a 68-61 victory over the visiting Pine Manor Gators on Saturday afternoon in Johnson's season opener. With the win, the Badgers advance to 1-0 on the young season.

Johnson had three players in double figures and held the Gators to 36.1% percent shooting. The Badgers also outrebounded Pine Manor 45-27 and forced five turnovers in their winning effort. 

Ashley Goddard led three players in double figures with a game high 16 points and six rebounds. Domonique Carter-Stanley scored 14 points for the Badgers and added four assists and three steals to her stats. Kasey DeGreenia contributed 12 points in the win while Allyson Bruckner pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out five assists. 

The Badgers jumped out to a 16-4 advantage in the opening three minutes to set the tone for the rest of the game. The Gators were able to close their deficit to four in the middle of the first quarter, but 5-3 spurt by the Badgers pushed it to 21-15 to close out the first quarter. The Gators stepped up in the second quarter, putting up 28 points to Johnson's 16. Despite the improved effort from the Gators, the Badgers ended the second quarter ahead 32-27.

Johnson St. and PMC traded baskets to in the third quarter before a bucket from Pine Manor's Alexis Lee pushed the Gators ahead 50-84 with with 1:26 left in the quarter. A 14-0 run in the fourth and final quarter pushed the Badgers a 62-55 lead. DeGreenia's final lay-up of the game sealed the win for the Badgers ending the game 68-61 in the hosts' favor.
