Mariners Outlast Badgers

Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball picked up a 60-51 win over Johnson State in North Atlantic Conference action on Friday night, inside of Smith Gymnasium.

The Badgers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Mariners responded with nine-unanswered points and never looked back, taking a 14-9 lead into the second quarter and a 29-16 lead into the intermission.

Maine Maritime's Alayne Felix led all players in the first twenty minutes with nine points while Domonique Carter-Stanley led the Badgers with seven points.

The Mariners built their biggest lead of the game, 45-24, with 2:35 to go in the third quarter, following four-straight points from Lauren Leskowsky and a jumper from Tess Clark. Johnson State scored six-straight to close out the third quarter and cut the Mariners' lead to 46-31.

The Badgers extended their scoring run to nine points to cut Maine Maritime's lead to 46-34 with 8:10 to go in the game, but the Mariners hung on for the victory and season sweep.

Felix ended the night with a game-high 18 points and three rebounds, Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) and Clark each added 10 points, and Willey added a team-leading seven rebounds.

Kasey DeGreenia led the Badgers with 13 points and six rebounds, while Carter-Stanley ended the game with nine points and Ashley Goddard chipped in with a game-high 10 rebounds.

With the win, Maine Maritime improves to a perfect 22-0 all-time against the Badgers.

The Mariners improve to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the NAC, while the Badgers fall to 9-11 on the season and 6-7 in conference play. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow when they host Lyndon at 1:00 p.m., Johnson State travels to take on Husson University tomorrow, also at 1:00 p.m.
