Badgers Drop First Game of Mustang Classic

NEWTON, MASS. – The Johnson State College women's basketball team was defeated by Elms College 75-71 in the first game of the Mustang Classic, hosted by Mount Ida College, on Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers drop to 1-1 on the season, while the Blazers improve to 1-1.

1st Quarter

The teams played an even first quarter, with Elms holding a 13-11 lead at the end of the period.

2nd Quarter

Johnson and Elms stayed even through the second, with Johnson taking the lead late and going into halftime up 24-22. Kasey DeGreenia (Concord, Vt.) and Sarah Voorhis (Nashua, N.H.) led the Badgers in the half with 6 points each, while DeGreenia collected 12 rebounds.

3rd Quarter

The Badgers pulled away some in the third quarter, leading by as much as six midway through the period. The Blazers stormed back, however, to take a six-point lead of their own into the fourth, 52-46.

4th Quarter

Johnson was able to hang in until the end, but were unable to take over the lead and fell 75-71. Voorhis and DeGreenia kept the Badgers close with 14 and 12 second half points, respectively.

Johnson Leaders

Voorhis led the Badger with 20 points and hauled in eight rebounds. DeGreenia added 18 more while collecting 15 rebounds, eight of which were offensive. Ashley Goddard (Jamaica, Vt.) scored 11 and tied DeGreenia's game high 15 rebounds. This was the second consecutive game to start the season that DeGreenia and Goddard each recorded a double-double.

Nichols Leaders

Alexandra Marques led the Blazers with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kayla Aberdale outscored all bench players with 16, while Mackenzie Larochelle recorded a game high eight assists.

Stat Breakdown

The teams were nearly even from the field, with Elms edging Johnson 40.6% to 39.7%. Elms held a stronger advantage from beyond the arc, outshooting Johnson 42.9% to 33.3%. Johnson State outrebounded the Blazers by a margin of 44-38, while Elms narrowly won the turnover battle 22-18.
