Big First Quarter Puts Mariners over Badgers

JOHNSON, VT. – The Johnson State College women's basketball team fell to Maine Maritime Academy 69-51 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Friday evening.

The Badgers drop to 9-10 overall and 6-7 in the NAC, while the Mariners go to 11-9 on the season and 7-6 in the conference.

1st Quarter

The Mariners jumped out to an early 16-6 lead midway through the first quarter. Maine Maritime Academy held the lead through the remainder of the period to take a 27-13 lead into the second. Caitlin Kane led all scorers in the quarter with nine for the Mariners, while Domonique Carter-Stanley (Norwalk, Conn.) picked up seven for Johnson.

2nd Quarter

The Badgers chipped away at the Maine Maritime Academy lead in the second, pulling the game to single digits in the final seconds. Johnson outscored the Mariners 13-8 in the second to bring the score to 35-26 at the break. Alayne Felix scored thee to lead the Mariners, while Carter-Stanley scored four for Johnson. 

3rd Quarter

Maine Maritime Academy maintained their lead in the third, with the teams trading baskets and Johnson unable to make a run. The Mariners held a 56-38 lead going into the final quarter. Megan McLean led the Mariners with eight points in the third, while Carter-Stanley put up six for the Badgers.

4th Quarter

Maine Maritime Academy put the Badgers away in the fourth, holding their 18-point lead and taking the 69-51 victory.

Johnson Leaders

Carter-Stanley led all scorers with 20 points and picked up four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sarah Voorhis (Nashua, N.H.) added eight more points, while Ashley Goddard (Jamaica, Vt.) recorded a team-high seven rebounds.

MMA Leaders

Felix paced the Mariners with 18 points and had four assists. McLean put up 16, while Melinda Ogden picked up a game-high 10 boards.

Stat Breakdown

The Mariners shot 39.3% from the field to Johnson's 27.9%, while shooting 45.0% from three-point range to Johnson's 13.3%. The Badgers were outrebounded 51-36, but forced 17 turnovers while committing just 10.
