Women's Basketball lose in NAC Season Opener

JOHNSON, Vt.- The Northern Vermont-Johnson women's basketball team dropped their first conference game of the season against Maine Maritime Academy by a score of 80-44.

The Badgers (1-5, 0-1) were led offensively by junior guard Kaitlyn Brouard (Milton, Vt.). Brouard added 8 points on 2-9 shooting for the Badgers. The Mariners had three players contribute double digits. Melinda Ogden had 18 for the Mariners, while Alayne Felix and Deirdre Sanborn contributed 15 points and 12 points. The Mariners controlled the backboards the entire game outrebounded the Badgers 61-32.

It was a slow start for the Badgers as Maine Maritime opened the game on a 14-3 run. The Badgers continued to battle but the steady ball movement and strong offensive shooting excelled the Mariners to a 41-19 lead going into the second half.

The second half was no different as the Mariners controlled the game. A few plays early in the second half from freshman Alexandra Barry (Hopewell Jct, NY) proved to show some heart for the Badgers. Barry sunk a baseline jump shot and followed it up with a layup and an assist to teammate Lindsey LaPerle (Bethel, Vt.) for a three-point field goal. The late run was not enough for the Badgers as the Mariners scored 39 points to the Badgers 25.

The Badgers fall to 0-1 in the NAC and will face Husson University tomorrow at 3:00pm.
