Farmington, ME — The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's basketball team fell 71-54 in a North Atlantic Conference matchup versus UMaine-Farmington on Friday night. The Badgers were led by senior guard Kaitlyn Brouard (Milton, VT) with 17 points on 5-9 shooting from behind the arc and six rebounds. Junior Lindsey LaPerle (Bethel, VT) also put up double-digits for the Badgers with 12 points and four rebounds.
Farmington's (2-6, 2-1 NAC) McKenna Brodeur led all players with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Beavers' Haley Felkel (13), Molly Folsom (12), and Paige Carter (11) joined Brodeur in double-digit scoring.
Johnson (1-7, 0-3 NAC) got on the board first as Brouard drained her first three of the contest just over a minute into play. After a couple of made field goals by the Beavers, LaPerle gave Johnson the edge with a made three-point shot of her own. Farmington then made an 8-0 run before Brouard nailed another three to cut the lead to three. The Beavers then capitalized to push their lead to 22-14 entering the second quarter.
Entering the second quarter, the Badgers turned up the intensity on defense to cut down on Farmington's lead. Solid shooting by LaPerle and Mary Richardson (Vernon, VT) in the second stanza helped lead the Badgers to a 13-6 advantage over Farmington to cut the Beavers' lead to one, 28-27.
After trading baskets early in the third quarter, the Beavers ran away from the Badgers offensively. Farmington ran away with a 26-7 scoring advantage in the quarter and forced 7 turnovers by the Badgers. Despite a big performance by Farmington in the third, Johnson would not go away as Brouard put up nine of her 17 points in the final four minutes of the game to narrow the Beavers' 27-point lead.
Despite hot shooting from behind the arc as the Badgers went 10-31 compared to the Beavers' 2-15, Farmington edged Johnson as they went 38.1% from the field compared to Johnson's 26.2%. Although Johnson outscored Farmington in the final stanza, the Beavers emerged victorious, 71-54. The Badgers collected a season-high 12 steals in the defeat.
