WBB: Johnson Downed by Anna Maria, 89-51

Paxton, Mass. — The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's basketball team was defeated by Anna Maria College 89-51 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Badgers move to 2-11 overall while the Amcats improve to 3-10.

Johnson was led by senior forward Mariah Ramos (Lebanon, NH) as she scored 12 points and secured six rebounds. The Badgers also received eight points apiece from Alexandra Barry (Hopewell Jct, NY) and Mary Richardson (Vernon, VT). Anna Maria was led by Sierra Johnson with a game high 20 points on 10-20 shooting.

Early turnovers by the Badgers gave the team a slow start as the Amcats jumped out to an early 12-3 lead. Johnson tried to close the gap with contributions from Barry, senior Kaitlyn Brouard (Milton, VT), and freshman Amorette Rodriquez (Downey, CA), but they trailed Anna Maria 28-10 entering the second frame.

The Badgers started the second quarter strong with two offensive rebounds and a made three-point field goal by Brouard. The Amcats answered with a three from Sienna Johnson before Barry hustled back and added a basket of her own. The teams continued to trade baskets through the second quarter, but Anna Maria continued to maintain an 18-point lead over Johnson at halftime.

Down 46-28, the Badgers looked to carry their offensive momentum from the second quarter to close the gap. Johnson continued to trade baskets with the Amcats in the third stanza and received 15 points off five assists, but Anna Maria continued to capitalize off the Badgers' turnovers and extended their lead to 22 entering the final frame. The Badgers ended the day with 28 turnovers to the Amcats' 12, but won the rebounding battle 38-32. Both teams shot well from the free throw line as Anna Maria went 9-10 and the Badgers shot 14-19 from the charity stripe.
