Owls Top Badgers on Senior Day

JOHNSON, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's basketball team dropped their last home game of the season to the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls on Saturday afternoon. The Badgers lost the contest on senior day by a score of 71-57.

Two seniors led the way for the Badgers. Mariah Ramos (Lebanon, N.H) scored a team high 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season. Kaitlyn Brouard (Milton, Vt.)  wasn't far behind as she poured in 15 points for the Badgers. The scored remained close through the first quarter as the Owls led 19-17. Ramos paced the Badgers as she poured in 11 points in the first quarter. Headed into the second stint of the game the Badgers continued to stay poised and controlled the entire quarter. The Badgers outscored the Owls 21-13. Mary Richardson (Vernon, Vt.) poured in six points while Brouard added seven to give the Badgers a steady 38-32 lead headed into the break.

Coming out of halftime the Owls regrouped and controlled the pace for the quarter. Hunter Mercier scored nine points on 3-6 shooting from the field to pace the Owls to 21 points on the quarter. The Badgers struggled to score, and the Owls clamped down on defense to hold the home team to just nine points in the quarter.

With the Owls holding a 53-47 lead headed into the final stint of the game there was pressure on the Badgers to get stops defensively and produce on the other end. Rhylee Wright came out strong for the Owls. Wright poured in 12 points in the quarter and shot an impressive 5-7 from the field. The Badgers struggled to control the ball but made a last second push to try and cut into the deficit. With baskets from Brouard and Lindsay LaPerle (Bethel, Vt.) the Badgers began to make a run. Unfortunately, an Owl's basket and consecutive stops sealed the deal as the Badgers fell in regulation.
