Norwich Slips Past Johnson 13-7

Junior midfielder Chapel Guarnieri  scored her second career sock trick after scoring six goals to lead the Norwich University women's lacrosse team  to a 13-7 win over Johnson State College in non-conference action at Sabine Field Sunday afternoon.

Guarnieri added seven ground balls, three draw controls force four turnovers to her tally as freshman Kathryn Albretsen put in four goals in the net for the Cadets (2-1). Sophomore Teresa Segreti recording a hat trick with three goals of her own along with the three draw controls, while freshman goalie Janice Bolton  turned away eight shots in between the pipes for her second win of the season.

Norwich opened the contest by scoring four straight, two from Segreti, before Johnson State's Nichole Weeks scored back-to-back goals to put the Badgers (0-1) on the board. Guarnieri scored back-to-back goals, once on a free position shot, to give Norwich the 6-2 lead before Weeks notched the hat trick. Albretsen would score the seventh Norwich goal with just 1.6 seconds remaining to end the first half.

It only took Guarnieri 14 seconds to score her fourth goal of the game to open the second half before the Badgers responded with back-to-back goals by sophomore Shannon Rooney to trail by three, 8-5, at the 20:38 mark.

Both teams traded a pair of goals in a span of four minutes before Norwich extended the lead with three unanswered goals, two from Albretsen with Guarnieri recording the sock trick in between, to close out the contest with the 13-7 win.

Sophomore Kaitlin Boucher came up with five saves on 18 shots for the Badgers, two at point blank off of the free position attempts, in the loss. 

Norwich outmatched Johnson State in every statistical category. The Cadets outshot Johnson State, 31-18, picked up 31 ground balls to the Badgers' 22, and successfully cleared the ball 14 out of 21 attempts with Johnson State going 10-21.

The Cadets are back in action on Wednesday, March 23 at Southern Vermont for the 4:00 p.m. draw. The Badgers will face Smith College next week in another non-conference match-up.
