Badgers Fall 20-1 to Spartans

The Spartans scored early and often, as 15 different players recorded a goal on the way to a 20-1 victory over Johnson State on Saturday afternoon in Spartan Stadium. 

Castleton sent off its seven seniors off in style on senior day, with all six field players recording a point andMeghan Els earning the win in net. The Spartans outshot the Badgers 41-5 overall and picked up 29 ground balls while causing 17 turnovers to improve to 9-5 and 7-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. Johnson State fell to 1-10 overall. 

Senior Rachel Bombardier scored the first two goals of her career and added three draw controls while Taylor Esperti also scored and led the defense with six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Classmates Brianna MacKay and Brandi Whittemore both scored twice while Emilee Maher had a goal and Maria Ploof dished off an assist. Els made one save in 39:56 to earn the victory in net. 

Johnson State's Nichole Weeks scored the only goal for her team while also winning four draw controls. Shannon Rooney added three draw controls and two ground balls. Kaylyn Rood took the loss in net, giving up 20 goals while making 11 saves. 

MacKay gave Castleton a 1-0 lead just 55 seconds into the contest, before Chantel Wilkin and Ashley Pelkeymade it 3-0 after just three minutes. Whittemore and Wilkin stretched it to 5-0 and then Megan Wood capped a quick four-goal spurt for the 9-0 lead after ten minutes. Maher, Esperti, Emily Cross and Holly Downing each added goals in the period for a 13-0 lead at the half. 

Bombardier opened up the second half scoring four minutes into the period. Goals by Clancy Farrand, Danielle Pickard and Downing extended the lead to 17-0, before Weeks put the Badgers on the board with 17:55 left.Sabrina Hosner scored her first goal just over a minute later and Castleton added two goals in the final ten minutes for the 20-1 victory. 

Junior Grace Johnson dished off a team-high five assists to go with one goal and three draw controls while Whittemore recorded three assists, and three draw controls. 

The Spartans return to action on Monday when they travel to face Green Mountain at 4 pm.
