Badgers Top SUNY Canton in 2OT Thriller

JOHNSON, VT. - The Johnson State College women's soccer team defeated SUNY Canton 5-4 in double overtime in a non-conference match Monday afternoon at Minaert Field.

The season ending victory gives the Badgers a final overall record of 3-12. SUNY Canton falls to 3-13-1 with the loss.

SCORING 

1st Half: Maddison Prescott (Topsham, Maine) opened the scoring in the 4th minute on a goal assisted by Briana Stadler (Cornwall, N.Y.) The Kangaroos answered back three minutes later on a goal by Ryley Scott. SUNY Canton posted two more unanswered goals by Katie Lamica and Kristina Dinardo to pull ahead 3-1. Kylie Aither cut the SUNY Canton lead in half in the closing minutes of the period, scoring an unassisted goal to bring the score to 3-2 at the half.

2nd Half: Scott netted her second goal of the game to extend the lead back to two for the Kangaroos in the 53rd minute. In the 65th minute, Aither scored her second of the contest, assisted by Prescott, to bring the score to 4-3. In the final minutes of regulation, Prescott put in her second of the match to send the game to overtime.

1st Overtime: Prescott had two prime breakaway chances in the first overtime, with one chip-shot just being stopped by the SUNY Canton keeper, and another rocket shot clinging off the crossbar.  

2nd Overtime: Prescott completed the hat trick in the 3rd minute of the second overtime when Aither rung a shot off the post that went right to Prescott, who buried the game winner.

GOALKEEPERS 

Danielle Schreiner (St. Albans, Vt.) made key stops in the game to earn the win, stopping 18 shots on goal.  Allison Wakefield started in net for the Kangaroos, stopping six of eight shots. Wakefield was relieved by Kelsi Gilbert to start the second half, who gave up three goals on eight shots and was tagged with the loss.

SENIOR CELEBRATION

Prior to the match, seniors Prescott and Stadler were recognized for playing in their final home match at Minaert Field.
