Badgers Fall in First Conference Match

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Johnson State College women's tennis team was defeated by Colby-Sawyer 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon in their first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) match of the season.

The Badgers drop to 3-1 overall on the season and 0-1 in conference, while Colby-Sawyer improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in NEAC play.

Doubles

The Chargers took all three doubles matches to open the contest. The team of Katerina Van Woerkom (Miami, Fla.) and Nicole Monick (Bennington, Vt.) fell to the Chargers top flight doubles pairing, 8-1.  The Badgers' duo of Jana Somero (St. Albans, Vt.) and Mikayla Messier (Sheldon, Vt.) also dropped their match 8-1. Kali Covell (Hartford, Vt.) and partner Sam Kershner (Essex, Vt.) were unable to take a game in third flight singles and fell 8-0.

Singles

Colby-Sawyer took all six matches of singles play. Van Woerkom fell in #1 singles in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Reigning NAC Rookie of the Week Grace Page (Bennington, Vt.) also dropped a straight sets match in number two singles 6-0, 6-0. In third flight singles action, Somero was able to take three games over the two sets, but ultimately fell 6-1, 6-2.

Covell fell in her #4 singles match 6-2, 6-0. Monick took four games in fifth flight singles, but lost in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, while Ashley Fogg (White River Junction, Vt.) fell in the final singles match 6-1, 6-2.
