Badgers Denied by Western New England

JOHNSON, VT. – The Johnson State College women's tennis team was defeated by Western New England 8-1 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match.

The Badgers drop to 6-3 overall on the season and are 3-2 in conference play. Western New England improves to 5-2 on the season.

Doubles

The Golden Bears took all three doubles matches to open the contest. The team of Katherina Van Woerkom (Miami, Fla.) and Nicole Monick (Bennington, Vt.) fell to the WNE top flight doubles pairing, 8-5.  The Badgers' duo of Kali Covell (Hartford, Vt.) and Grace Page (Bennington, Vt.) dropped their second doubles match 8-1. In third doubles, Ashley Fogg (White River Junction, Vt.) and Sam Kershner (Essex, Vt.) fell 8-2.

Singles

The Golden Bears took five of the six singles matches. Van Woerkom fell in #1 singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Grace Page (Bennington, Vt.) dropped a straight sets match in number two singles 6-1, 6-1. In third flight singles action, Jana Somero (St. Albans, Vt.) was able to come back from a 6-3 first set loss to take the second set 6-2 and win the ten-point tie breaker 10-3.

Covell fell in her #4 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Monick dropped her fifth flight singles match 6-0, 6-2, while Jordan Miller (Stowe, Vt.) lost 6-1, 6-2 in sixth flight singles action.

Johnson will host Green Mountain in a North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division match on Wednesday, September 28 at 3:30 PM. Senior Katherina Van Woerkom will be recognized in her final home contest.
